Washi Tape Cake Bunting

Here’s an easy DIY cake topper you can try. I made this for Rob’s birthday a few days ago. Made and shot these at night, so pardon the poor lighting.

What you need:

  1. Chopsticks
  2. Washi tape
  3. String
  4. Permanent marker, scissors
  5. And some cake, of course!

I baked this Ghirardelli Ultimate Fudge Brownie mix (Thanks to my sister for these super cool wooden spoons/drumsticks!).

Step 1: Think about what whether you want to write something or just make decorative bunting. I chose to write the celebrant’s name, which meant I needed six flags.

Step 2: Cover your chopsticks with tape, to make them colorful posts. Then cut some string; make sure to leave some allowance at each end to tie them to the posts.

Step 3: To make the flags, fold the tape over the string. Cut out a triangle at the bottom of each flag. Use the marker to write the letters. For longer messages or for the purely decorative one, try a multi-level bunting like this one from Sugar and Cloth.

Step 4: Tie the ends to your chopstick posts and secure with tape. Stick it on the cake and you’re done!
